🔖 Ingredients & Substitutions
- Pretzel buns: You can also use brioche buns, Hawaiian rolls, sesame buns, sourdough, etc.
- Shredded chicken: I like to use leftover shredded rotisserie chicken, but you could also use skinless chicken breasts.
- Hot honey: You can use store-bought or make your own homemade hot honey with red pepper flakes and garlic powder. You can even add in some cayenne pepper or some hot sauce to maximize the spicy flavors!
- Coleslaw mix: I use a tri-colored premade mix, but you can make your own by mixing shredded carrots and red & green cabbage, or try this lite oil and vinegar coleslaw!
- Vinegar: I use rice wine vinegar, but apple cider vinegar or mirin works too.
- Sesame oil: Toasted sesame oil, not pure sesame oil. I also like to mix in some toasted sesame seeds, but this is optional.
- Boursin: Shallot & chive or garlic & herb are both good options. Goat cheese is great too! You could also use pepper jack cheese or provolone, if you prefer.
- Red onion: Crispy fried onions would be another great way to add some crunch!
- Jalapeno: You can also use serranos, habaneros, or red chilies, or omit if you don't want added spice.

Yes! The hot honey shredded chicken and coleslaw mix can both be prepared up to 2 days ahead. Store them separately in the fridge and assemble just before eating.
It can vary depending on brand or the chili-to-honey ratio, but hot honey is typically about as spicy as hot sauces like Tapatio, though the sweetness balances out the heat.
