My husband is nuts for spicy habanero hot sauce. In fact, he puts his favorite bottled habanero hot sauce, which he affectionately calls "mother's milk," on EVERYTHING! Yes, even Assyrian food, which, if I'm being honest, kind of gets on my nerves. 😂
So when my friend Jamie generously gave me some beautiful habaneros from her garden (the ones I planted are still not ripe), I considered making mango habanero salsa, but then I came up with plan B.
The first few habaneros went into my fire cider, which I had to prep for an upcoming demonstration I'll be giving at a local event. I saved the rest for this salsa. To balance the heat, I added tomatoes, onions, and garlic, which were all homegrown. The result was an incredibly fresh salsa with a wonderful smoky flavor.

🔖 Ingredients & Substitutions
- Peppers: I started with 4 large habanero peppers, but ended up adding one more to increase the spice level.
- Tomatoes: One pound of Roma tomatoes or other medium-sized firm tomatoes.
- Onion: One medium white onion.
- Garlic: Four or more cloves of garlic.
- Cilantro: Two tablespoons, chopped.
- Vinegar: A tablespoon of vinegar; may substitute with an equal amount of lime juice.
- Seasoning: Sea salt or kosher salt.
🌶 How to Make Roasted Habanero Salsa
Step 1: Roast habaneros, tomatoes, quartered onion, and unpeeled garlic in a hot skillet. Once charred, add peppers, tomatoes, peeled onion, and peeled garlic to a food processor.

Step 2: Add cilantro, salt, and vinegar, and pulse until you achieve the desired consistency, chunky or smooth. I prefer a smoother texture.
