Here's a super quick and easy recipe that you can make in a matter of minutes! This Lemon Garlic Aioli Sauce is made with a handful of ingredients, yet its flavor elevates burgers, potato cheese balls, seafood, or Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwiches!

    lemon garlic aioli

Recently I was making chopped cheese sandwiches for dinner and my son asked if I'd make some garlic aioli to add to the sandwiches. He whipped out his phone and started looking up aioli recipes. Seriously? I think he forgot that his mom just happens to be a food blogger. 😉

I told him to put his phone away, and that I've got this! Although traditional aioli is made with a food processor and uses an emulsion made with olive oil and raw eggs, there's a much easier way to prepare aioli. Using mayo cuts out the process of making the emulsion that may or may not emulsify successfully.

All you really need to make a delicious and easy Lemon Garlic Aioli is mayonnaise, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and black pepper. I would have added lemon zest but I knew Scotty wouldn't want any. He's what you might call a "purist".

Scotty loved the taste of the Aioli sauce and said it was perfect. Yee of little faith, did you expect anything else? Now I find myself making it whenever I want to add a little sumthin' sumthin' to main dishes, appetizers, or when I want to whip up a quick and delicious dipping sauce.

🛒 What Goes Into This Recipe

    🔖 Recipe Ingredients and Substitutions

    • Mayonnaise: You can use regular mayo or lite mayo to cut down on fat and calories.
    • Garlic: Always use fresh garlic whenever possible, especially when it's the main ingredient in a recipe!
    • Lemon Juice: If possible use fresh lemon juice. If you have to, you can substitute jarred lemon juice.
    • Salt: I always use sea salt but you can use whatever salt you happen to have.
    • Pepper: Freshly ground black pepper is the best option here. Just give your pepper mill a couple of turns.

🍋 How To Make Lemon Garlic Aioli

In a small bowl, combine mayo, crushed garlic, freshly squeezed lemon juice, and sea salt. Add freshly ground black pepper to taste and whisk to combine.

    Serving Suggestions

Lemon Garlic Aioli is a versatile sauce. It makes a great dipping sauce for your fries, nuggets, or zucchini fritters. You can also serve it on burgers, crab cakes, and hot dogs, or slather it on sandwiches.

    🤷🏻‍♀️Recipe FAQs

    Is aioli just garlic mayonnaise?

Aioli is prepared by drizzling olive oil into a food processor with raw egg yolks and processing the mixture until a creamy emulsion is achieved. After that, minced garlic, lemon juice, salt, and pepper are mixed in. Getting the mixture to emulsify isn't always easy. Sometimes it can break.

Luckily, there is a hack for making aioli that doesn't require oil or raw eggs. Since mayonnaise is prepared with those ingredients already, you can skip that step and simply add garlic, lemon juice, and salt to mayonnaise to make amazing garlic aioli.

What is lemon aioli made of?

If prepared the traditional way, lemon aioli is made with olive oil, raw egg yolks, salt, and lemon juice. If prepared the easy way, all you need is mayo, garlic, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Sometimes dijon mustard is also added.

    How do you use aioli?

Lemon Garlic Aioli Sauce can be served with salmon, crab cakes, french fries, grilled asparagus, or other veggies. Add a dollop to baked potatoes, or serve with artichokes. You can also serve it as a condiment with cheeseburgers, or as a sandwich spread.

    👩🏼‍🍳 Recipe Pro Tips

    • Store homemade lemon garlic aioli in an air-tight container for up to a week in the refrigerator.
    • Try mixing in some Sriracha, Tabasco, chopped jalapenos, or canned chipotle peppers to add a little heat to the sauce and use it as a spicy dip!
    • To make other flavors of aioli you can add chopped chives, cilantro, parsley, basil, dill, lemon zest, or green onion.
    • If you have a mortar and pestle you can use them to crush the garlic into the salt and then mix it with the other ingredients.
