Easy mug cakes have long been a favorite of mine because they require very little time and effort and make for great single-serving desserts. This microwave apple crisp in a mug is my favorite because it is just like eating a cup full of apple pie filling.
Delicious cinnamon-coated apples are topped with sweet oat crumbles and microwaved to perfection, and it only takes a few minutes! This microwave apple crisp recipe really is that simple, but it is so comforting and tastes just like apple pie!

🛒 What You Need For This Recipe
🔖 Ingredients & Substitutions
- Apples: I recommend Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Pink Ladies, or Honey Crisp apples. Try to avoid varieties that aren't crisp as they will turn into mush.
- Syrup: I prefer to use a fruity syrup like boysenberry syrup or this homemade fig syrup, but maple syrup works just as well.
- Sugar: You can use either light brown sugar or dark brown sugar.
- All-Purpose Flour: Alternatively, you can use 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 teaspoon water for a gluten-free version.
- Spices: I keep it simple and only use cinnamon but you can also use ginger, apple pie spice, cardamom, or cloves if you want.
- Oats: Rolled oats or quick-cooking oats work best.
- Granola (optional): I like to add a little crunch with the peanut butter protein granola from Trader Joe's but you can use any granola you like or substitute crushed peanuts, cashews, or even craisins.

🤷🏻♀️ Recipe FAQs
When selecting apples for apple crisp, it's best to use varieties that will hold their shape when introduced to heat, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Golden Delicious. Other varieties tend to collapse and turn to applesauce when baked. As a rule of thumb, if they're crisp, they will work for apple crisp!
This is a personal choice. You can use a peeler to easily remove the apple skin before dicing it, but I prefer to leave the skin on.
👩🏻🍳 Pro Tips
- Although you can peel the apple, I left the peel on for added fiber and texture.
- Microwaving time may vary based on your microwave and the mug you use.
- You can make this microwave apple crisp up to 24 hours in advance if refrigerated in an airtight container.
