I still remember the first time I used smoked salmon and cream cheese in a recipe together for the first time. It was in the early nineties, I made an Emeril Lagasse recipe for smoked salmon cheesecake. Although part of me felt that salmon and cheesecake should never be in the same sentence, I decided to give it a try. That’s the day I learned to think outside the box when it comes to cooking! The salmon cheesecake was the hit of the party, and I had to share the recipe with many of my guests. This Smoked Salmon Dip Recipe was inspired by Emil’s recipe. It has some of the same flavors, but definitely a lot easier to prepare. The next time you have some leftover smoked salmon, try this recipe!

Smoked Salmon Dip Recipe

This smokey dip starts off with some softened cream cheese, blended with a mix of yogurt and sour cream. The flavor is kicked up with lemon juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire, liquid smoke, and ranch dressing. Then the fun part; adding the mix-ins: Bacon, chives, garlic, fresh dill, and the star of the show: Salmon! As usual, I’d like to offer you some other mix-in suggestions. Feel free to toss in some diced red or green onion, sweet mini bell peppers (or serranos, or jalapenos, if you can handle the heat). Another great option is capers. I leave them out because my daughter, Nena, doesn’t like them. However, when I make it for my husband, Scott, I always include them. Speaking of Scott, he loves horseradish too, yet another great option! I always adjust the recipe based on who I will be serving it to, don’t you?


Which Smoked Salmon Is Best For Making Smoked Salmon Dip?

If you own an electric smoker, you’re in luck. You can smoke some salmon for dinner, then use the leftovers to make this dip. This is what I usually do. However, if you don’t own a smoker, all hope is not lost. Using prepackaged smoked salmon works just as well. Costco has a good Smoked Salmon option that works well in this recipe, or use your favorite brand.

Ingredients
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/4 cup yogurt
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 2 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. Tapatio
  • 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire
  • 1/4 tsp. liquid smoke
  • 2 tsp. ranch seasoning
  • 1/4 cup crumbled bacon
  • 1 T. chives
  • 1 clove garlic (pressed)
  • 2 T. fresh dill (chopped)
  • 4 oz smoked salmon (flaked)
Instructions
  1. Soften cream cheese, and stir in yogurt, sour cream, and lemon juice. Mix until thoroughly combined.

  2. Add the remaining ingredients, except the salmon. Make sure everything is blended. Add the flaked smoked salmon last. 

  3. Serve with crackers and sliced vegetables.
