    🧐 Why This Recipe Works

    • All of the bowl's ingredients fall under the same Mediterranean/Middle Eastern umbrella so they pair beautifully together!
    • Mediterranean food is super healthy and loaded with fresh veggies and herbs, wholesome legumes, and heart-healthy olive oil!
    • The recipe components can be prepared ahead of time. So when you feel like having a falafel bowl, all you have to do is assemble your falafel salad.
    • Although I always encourage you to make your food from scratch, a lot of the components can be purchased, for example, naan bread, hummus, tahini, tabouli, and even falafel!

🛒 What You Need For This Recipe

    🔖 Recipe Ingredients & Substitutions

    • Falafel: There's nothing like homemade falafel. They're easy to prepare using my falafel recipe. However, if it's more convenient, you can purchase them from your favorite restaurant or ethnic market.
    • Salad: I added tabbouleh to my falafel bowls but Lebanese fattoush salad would also be a great option. You can also try a simple Mediterranean salad. It can also be as easy as using baby spinach or shredded romaine lettuce, chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, fresh herbs, olive oil, and a squeeze of lemon juice.
    • Hummus: There's nothing like authentic Lebanese hummus. Once you've made your own, it's hard to go back to store-bought. However, if you have a brand you prefer, this could be one acceptable shortcut!
    • Sauce: I make the tahini sauce using my 2 ingredient tahini paste. Another alternative is to use my yogurt shawarma sauce which is very similar to tzatziki.
    • Pita Bread: Here's a shortcut that I took because I didn't have time to bake my own pita bread. I used naan bread (psst, you can find it at Costco). You can also use flatbread or Stacy's Pita Chips.
    • Herbs: As a finishing touch, tuck fresh herbs around your falafel bowl or chop and sprinkle the herbs around your ingredients. Italian parsley would be my first choice but you can also try fresh basil, mint, or cilantro.

🧆 How to Make A Falafel Salad Bowl

Step 1: Start by adding a few tablespoons of creamy tahini sauce to a small bowl or ramekin and place it in the middle of a wide serving bowl.

Step 2: Next, arrange tabouli, hummus, naan bread, and falafel patties around it. Add pickled olives, kalamata olives, and chunks of feta cheese around the other ingredients. Drizzle hummus with olive oil and sprinkle with either paprika or cayenne pepper.

    🤷🏻‍♀️ Recipe FAQS

What is traditionally served with falafels?

Falafels are usually served with tabouli salad, freshly baked pita bread, creamy hummus, and drizzled with tahini sauce. Sometimes pickled turnips or pickled mangos are also served with the meal.

    falafel bowl

What is a falafel ball made of?

A falafel ball is made with a mixture of ground chickpeas, onion, garlic, parsley, cilantro, chile peppers, and a variety of spices including salt, black pepper, coriander, and cumin.

Do you eat falafels hot or cold?

Falafels are best when served immediately after they're fried so that they're hot and crispy.

Are falafels served with tahini or tzatziki?

Falafels are usually served with tahini sauce. This delicious sauce is made with tahini paste thinned with water and mixed with lemon juice, garlic, and salt. However, tzatziki can also be served with falafel. It comes down to a matter of taste and preference.

Can you eat falafel balls raw?

Although you can technically eat falafel raw, I wouldn't recommend it. Some of the ingredients, including flour and baking powder, can make the falafel mixture taste chalky and unpleasant when eaten raw. They are so much better when cooked, so why would you eat them raw?

    👩🏼‍🍳 Pro Tips

    • To cut down on the calories of this falafel bowl recipe and make your salad bowl even healthier, don't fry the falafel. Instead, place the patties on an oiled baking sheet, brush with olive oil, and bake in a 375 degrees F oven for 30 minutes or until crispy on both sides.
    • Another option is to use an air fryer to cook them. To air-fry, set the air-frier temperature to 375 degrees F and set the timer for 15 minutes.
    • Sprinkle your falafel salad bowl with toasted sesame seeds for a little added crunch.
