MIDDLE EASTERN ZA’ATAR SPICE BLEND

Za’atar is a delicious seasoning blend that includes sesame seeds, sumac and various herbs. It is used widely in the Middle East to enhance the flavor of a  variety of dishes. Za’atar is most commonly mixed with olive oil and spread on flat bread, but that’s only the beginning to the endless possibilities!

Although you can find it in most Middle Eastern markets, it’s so much better when you make your own. Want to enhances the flavor of hummus? Simply sprinkle it with this delicious spice mix. You can also use it to season meat, fish, or poultry before grilling. It’s so delicious, you’ll want to sprinkle it on everything!

Instructions
  1. Toast sesame seeds in a pan until fragrant and their color starts to change, being careful not to burn. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

  2. Once the sesame seeds have cooled off, mix with the other ingredients.

  3. Add to a spice jar and store for up to three months. Using a funnel makes this task a little easier!
