Ramadan Recipes
Ramadan is a sacred month observed by Muslims around the world, marked by daily fasting from sunrise to sunset. Each day begins with suhoor, the pre-dawn meal eaten before the fast begins, and ends with iftar, when families gather to break their fast at sunset.
I grew up in Iraq in a Christian Assyrian household, but Ramadan was woven into everyday life around us. I remember the evenings when neighborhoods came alive, kitchens were busy preparing comforting dishes, and tables were filled with soups, rice dishes, grilled meats, and sweet desserts shared with family and neighbors. Even though we did not observe the fast ourselves, the sense of community and the incredible aromas drifting from nearby kitchens left a lasting impression on me.
This collection of Ramadan recipes includes satisfying iftar dinner ideas, hearty suhoor meals, traditional Middle Eastern favorites, and easy dishes that can be made ahead. Whether you’re planning a full Ramadan menu, looking for quick recipes to break the fast, or searching for traditional dishes to serve during Ramadan, you’ll find plenty of inspiration here. These Ramadan recipes reflect the flavors commonly enjoyed during iftar and suhoor across Iraq and the broader Middle East.
Suhoor Recipes
Suhoor is the early morning meal eaten before sunrise. Because it needs to sustain energy throughout the day, suhoor often includes protein-rich dishes, whole grains, and egg dishes like vegetarian shakshuka and cilbir (poached Turkish eggs). Other popular options include homemade yogurt, khubz (Middle Eastern flatbread) smothered with geymar and fig preserves. Simple, nourishing recipes that can be prepared quickly are especially helpful during busy Ramadan mornings.
Traditional Ramadan Dishes
Many families begin iftar with stuffed dates and water, followed by soup before moving on to the main meal. These traditional dishes are perfect for gathering around the table and sharing with loved ones.
Across the Middle East, Ramadan tables are filled with comforting, shareable dishes. Popular savory options include creamy Lebanese hummus, warm Middle Eastern bread, fresh Lebanese fattoush salad, Middle Eastern salad, bulgur pilaf, and flavorful kofta kebabs and doner kebabs. Hearty stews like bamya (okra stew), ras asfoor, and fasolia are also common staples served at iftar on a bed of vermicelli rice.
Ramadan Desserts
Dessert plays an important role in many Ramadan gatherings. Classic sweets include syrup-soaked baklawa, stuffed Atayef pancakes, crispy Zlabia, mann al sama, lokum (Turkish delight), and creamy Muhallebi. These treats are often enjoyed after the evening meal or served alongside tea when visiting friends and family.
Traditional Ramadan Drinks
Refreshing and comforting beverages are just as important during Ramadan. Samovar tea, karak tea, and Turkish coffee are staples, while ayran (a refreshing yogurt drink) and qamar al-din are especially popular during this month and are often served chilled at iftar.
